On March 13th, most of the SDRI staff (except for Rio unfortunately) will be participating in the inaugural Safari Park Half Marathon at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (formerly the Wild Animal Park). This race is unfortunately sold out but there are still spots available for the Family 5k Fun Walk. With the growing popularity of half marathons lately, this race looks to be a good addition to the racing calendar in San Diego.
The race is relatively flat with a small hill around mile 3. It starts in the parking lot and goes briefly through the park, eventually ending up on the country roads that surround the Safari Park. The aid stations will be every 2-3 miles stocked with Powerade and water. While the weather here in San Diego is usually ideal for running all year round, March can be wet at times so don’t be surprised if there is rain. The race will go on rain or shine!
Another popular half marathon, the America’s Finest City Half Marathon, is now open for registration. This is the 34th year for this scenic half, as it starts at the Cabrillo National Monument and follows the famous San Diego bay front, ending in Balboa Park. This race is popular with runners because the majority of the race is downhill and flat, with the only hill at the very end (although many runners don’t appreciate the uphill right before the finish). This race is part of the Triple Crown Series and sells out FAST so sign up early! Since this race is in August, it is usually pretty warm so be prepared to bring some sort of hydration with you. This race is always well organized and efficiently run, a definite must for San Diego runners.
