Dr. Runco is a U.S. Navy and Gulf War Veteran. He began private practice in 2000 and has been helping runners both prevent and fix their running related injuries ever since. In addition to fixing runners over the past 15 years he also owned and operated a running specialty shoe store from 2004-2012. Dr. Runco is also the Race Director for the popular Dirt Devil Racing Half Marathon and Progressive Trail Race Series http://www.dirtdevilracing.com/. He has been a professor of Anatomy, Physiology, and Biomechanics at various colleges and continues to teach continuing education in the fields of rehabilitation, custom orthotics and athletic taping. His experience as a doctor, running shoe store owner, race director and ultramarathon runners provides him with one of a kind insight and experience that allows him to accurately access your injury and provide a comprehensive and effective treatment plan to get you back on the road and avoid unnecessary surgery……plus his last name is “Runco” (and yes that is his actual given name).
In the past 5 years, Dr. Runco has completed 8 50 mile ultramarathons and 14 marathons in 14 states. He recently completed the Antelope Canyon 50 Miler and the Death Valley Trail Marathon. He is currently training for the Bryce Canyon 50K in June and the Big Sur Trail Marathon in September.
I wanted to wish you happy holidays and let you know that the orthotics are helping me out immensely. I am following the run less, run faster program that appeared in Runners World and it has been going really well. I ran an 18:45 at the MCRD 5k. It was a flat course but still I ran it pain free with a smile on my face the whole way. Thanks again for all of the help. Take care and I’ll see you in the New Year.
Thank you for the time yesterday. I hope you can forgive me if I seemed stunned/perplexed as we talked. I found the information you gave me interesting as it was NOTHING that I was expecting. Incidentally, when my friends were asking me about you (ie – does this guy know what he is doing) – the answer was a) He is brilliant & b) It is very obvious why this gentleman has completed marathons. He is mentally tough and confidence seeps from every part of him.
Went running 3 miles yesterday without the IT Strap OR the Left knee brace – just the new shoes without the ortho inserts. No pain, just a slight bit of tightness this morning that I stretched out nicely. Looking forward to the inserts.
Thanks again for spending so much time with me.
I first saw Dr Runco about 5 years ago when I injured my left hip training for my first half marathon. Since then I have also seen him for various other injuries, such as IT Band, calf and shin splints all while I was training for various races. Every time I have gone to see him, he has always fixed whatever aliment that I have had, and this time was no different. Prior to his visit I went to the Orthopedist, who told me I was going to need rehab and if that didn’t work then I would need surgery. The best part was that he couldn’t even tell me what was wrong. So I decided to get a second opinion from someone that I trusted. I decided to go see Dr. Runco.
This time around, I came in with something that I had never experienced before. I told Dr. Runco, I was having severe pain in my left testicle while I run. After he asked standard questions such as: 1. Does it only hurt when you run? I told him “no, it also hurts when I sit down and when I go to the bathroom.” 2. How long has it been going on for? “Approximately 6 months” (I stopped running to let it heal on its own but to no avail) 3. When did I first notice it? 4. How far into the run does it start to hurt? And 5. On a scale from one to ten how bad is the pain? So I then proceeded to tell the Doc: “Doc have you ever been kicked square in b*lls as hard as someone can kick you? Well that’s how it feels. It got to the point where when I was on a 6 mile run with a friend, she had to go back on her own to get the car and pick me up. I couldn’t even stand up, walk or sit down.”
After I explained my symptoms to the Doctor, surprisingly he told me I actually have seen something similar to this. He said it had been 10 years or so, since he had seen something similar to this. He then proceeded to tell me a little about the patient that he saw 10 years ago. So then came the moment, I was dreading the most. He started to poke around to find the sore spot. It literally took him less than 5 minutes to find it, and we both knew when he found it. I shot through the roof, in pain. Once he told me what was wrong, he then told me what the treatment plan was going to be. It consisted of stretches, ultra sound, Chiropractic and massage techniques. That same day we started an aggressive treatment plan, twice a week.
Every time I go in for treatment, the treatment becomes easier and easier to deal with. The massage treatment consisted of him pushing down and applying a good amount of pressure to the upper left hip area, working it out while I extended and retracted my left leg. Dr Runco is able to apply more and more pressure to the area with every visit. During one of the sessions I asked the Doc if I could start running or should I just sit and rest, until it gets better. The Doc said I could run, but to take it easy. I was very apprehensive to get out and do a run because my last memory of running felt like someone was using my man parts as a speed bag. Not a good feeling.
So I finally decided to go on that run and what do you know, I am able to go out and do a run pretty much pain free. If you have any type of injury and want someone to give it to you straight and put you back together, go see Dr Runco. It will be worth it and you will be back on your feet in no time.
